The State Government recently opened up about its reform of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), saying: “The full package of reforms to the RTA will be set out in a Bill, to be introduced for debate in the Victorian Parliament this year.”Read more
Last year was a rousing success for renters’ right in Victoria. We launched the Make Renting Fair campaign in May 2017. Just five short months later the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced a 14-point list of reforms including a ban on ‘no reason’ evictions, the introduction of a landlord blacklist and that pets would soon be welcomed in rental properties.Read more
If you’ve ever had the unfortunate luck of getting caught without an umbrella in a sudden Victorian downpour, you might have decided to leave your soaking wet coat on your balcony to dry a bit instead of dripping water throughout the house. (Anything to keep water stains off the carpet!) Let’s pretend for a moment that you rent your home and your tenancy agreement contains a clause banning you from hanging washing on the balcony. You figure that it’s reasonable to leave your coat out, as it is only going to be there for an hour or two. Besides, a coat doesn’t count as hanging out the washing, right?Read more
